never take a counteroffer

feb 12, 2021 · 12 min · hosted by taylor desseyn

key takeaways

  • write down your real reasons for leaving before you give notice or accept a counteroffer.
  • evaluate job offers as if salaries were equal to see if you actually want the role.
  • once your employer counters, they know you're looking and may replace you cheaper anyway.
  • only accept one counteroffer negotiation round; multiple asks will likely kill the offer.
  • research your salary band and use your community to know fair market rates before negotiating.

Thank y'all for tuning in to guidance counselor 2.0. I'm very excited to be here with you today. We are, it's a little different vibe. I'm working off my laptop. I don't have my good video camera. I'm, I'm, I'm in an office in a room by myself. It feels, it doesn't feel the same, but we're still gonna have a good morning this morning talking about counter offers Julio, good morning. Again, as you are watching this and trickling in, we'd love to hear from you comment at me. I'll throw you up on the screen, give you a shout out. So what they want to bring to you today, the main topic I want to bring today, oh, before I get started, again, I'm out of my routine.

Before I get started, wanted to get some shout out to an intimate now. So first off, if you are watching this and you are in a hiring manager position or a leave position, you're watching this now or later on, I would love to work with you this year. So one of the goals I set on this live show is I want to work with five new companies this year because of this live show. And so if you are watching this or you are at a team or you're not retiring, no matter the skill set, it doesn't have to be in tech. Obviously I recruit software engineers, but it can be if you need 10 help desk people or 10 administrative assistance, right?

D, I mean, let me know and love to work with you. We have an awesome team at Beiko. So even if I can't work with you directly, I will still be involved in the hiring process with your team and it'll give you a excuse to hang out. Hang out with me, which is kind of fun. So again, shout out to my team Alex Pooler. Alex Pooler, DesignItGmail.com. He has done all of this that you see on the screen. He is doing copy for my email newsletter. If you are not on my email newsletter, shoot me a text and let me know you want in on my email newsletter.

It is weekly tips and tricks. Tomorrow, the long email comes out. So I sent out a one wrong email a month and then I send out some snippet to every other every week. Tomorrow is on time management. So if you want my tips and tricks on time management, shoot me a text 615-235-5650, get you out of there. Summer, Lettington, Summer is working diligently on my website design. So if you are needing help with website work, design work, creative work, let me know. Summer is the girl for that. She's in Seattle. I don't think she's even up yet. Drew is doing all my video work as well as Alex and then Brandon R.A.

from Brandon's sent me an extra to get a touch. You shout out to him with everything he does. Sorry, so let's get started. Counter offers. So I want this to be engaging because counter offers is a thing. Counter offers is a very thing. And as we approach the new year, or we are in the new year, not as we approach it, as we approach the end of the month and February, people are going to start moving jobs. You're going to get offers. People are starting now. LinkedIn's crazy. I talked about this from a networking perspective. You need to be on LinkedIn. You need to be networking right now.

I'd be fascinated to see LinkedIn's usage in January versus the rest of the year because everybody's updating their status as right now. And so counter offers are going to come into play. And my biggest thing, like if you have something to do, and you don't want to watch this anymore, don't take counter offer. Like that's it. I can end the show right there. Don't take the counter offer. So if you need to go, don't take the counter offer. Now, let's go ahead and talk about the counter offer in my thoughts on it. And again, if you have thoughts on counter offers, please comment, please at me.

Please chat me. And although your information up on the screen we could talk about it, but my thing with counter offers is this kind of like being in a relationship with a boyfriend, girlfriend. And you basically are threatening to leave the relationship for things to get better. And then all of a sudden, that person goes, OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, fine. I will finally put the toilet paper on the right way. There is a right way and wrong way to put on toilet paper. So that being said, do you want to stay with somebody? Do you want to stay with the company where you threatening to leave causes of change?

Now, there are different thoughts on this. And I love to hear your thoughts again. If you have thoughts, please comment. Please comment. I want this to be obviously a very organic conversation. But my thing in regards to counter offers is that there isn't a lot of places where counter offers makes sense. Because here's the deal. Then your employer knows you're looking. All right? You're playing those. You're looking. Hey, Mr. Manager, I want to leave. All right, we'll give you $20,000 more. Great. That manager now knows you're looking. And more times than not is probably going to replace you at a cheaper cost than the $20,000 they gave you.

And so one of the things I want to get across is before you go out looking for a job. And before you put in your notice, you need to write down what's important. I see so many people go in, sit down with their manager, go, Mr. Manager, Mrs. Manager, I want out. I'm out. I'm out. I'm done. And that Mr. Manager goes, hey, you know what? Like we love you here. I'm really sorry. What can we do? I'll give you $20,000 raise. I'll give you all this. And then the person goes, OK, great. But people forget to stick to their guns. And I don't know how to tell you.

You have to write down why you are leaving your job. So for example, Mighty Ducks. Mighty Ducks is one of my favorite movies. Hockey movies, if you haven't seen it, watch this, Disney classic. They get in trouble, the hockey team, as kids, and they write on their board. I will not disrespect the teacher or something like that. And by the way, I love how I can work Mighty Ducks reference into this live show. But they write on the board over and over and over again to prove a point. I think a lot of times people in the job search when they get the counter offers is they don't believe in why they're looking and they're just looking.

They just want out for no reason. I've worked with a ton of people over the last year. And before they give a notice, I'm like, listen, why are you leaving? You need to approach each job at the same salary. So let's say you get a better salary or another job. Let's say an offer that comes in is $20,000 higher. You need to approach that job and leaving your current job as if the salaries are the same. Now, if you are chasing money, go chase money. Go secure the bag as my buddy Chris Phillips says on the Spurs up show. Go get that bread, right? But for me, if it's not money, then stop jumping or stop staying with the counter offer because it offers you more money because that's not the reason why you're looking.

You're not looking for money. You're looking probably because of a lot of different, a lot of different other reasons, mainly culture that you can't put money on. Right, if they go out of terrible culture and I left, yeah, no, you couldn't pay me enough. So you need to be confident with that. So questions coming in, Michelle, so good to hear from you how you been, it's been a minute. So Michelle asked, how do you counter offer without feeling like you lost the offer if they pulled their offer? How do you know what to counter offer? Yeah, so this is a great question. So first of all, it's just a first of all, how do you counter offer without feeling like you lost the offer if they pulled offer?

So my thing is with this is that if a company pulls the offer, they weren't bought in to begin with, right? They weren't bought in to begin with. My thing is, is I think there is give on either side one time. Right, so let's say you're getting offer and it comes in and you're happy with it, but you'd like a little bit more money or a little bit of something. I'm okay with an individual going back one time, but the two, the three, the four times asking for stuff, you're gonna lose the offer at that point, but one time is okay. How do you know what to counter offer?

Like how do you know what to counter with? I think you gotta be educated, right? I think a lot of people go into the job search and there's not an educated, right? Do your research, right? Know what your salary bracket is. Right? Like I could go out asking for a ton of money and that could be way over the amount that I need to be given in the market because people don't research, right? People go through the job search process with reckless abandonment, not researching. And this needs to be a very meditative, thought out process. And so when a counter offer comes in, you are ready to go, listen, my biggest thing is culture.

The manager is a micromanager. So let me ask you this, if that manager gets transferred, would you stay? Well, no, because there's something else I don't like about that. See, that's what I'm saying. You have to dig in and really know yourself. So again, how do you know what to counter? Do research, know where you at from a salary band bracket, ask your friends, right? There are people in Vaco that I share all my information with. For a reason, right? We wanna make sure that we're all in this together and everybody's fair. So use that, use your community. Great question Michelle. Who, yeah, get that Guatt.

Get that bread, get that Guatt. I love it, I love that so much. So that's my thought on counters. I don't wanna go on any more right now, unless there's any more questions. My biggest thing with counters is, there's a reason why you're looking. And if you go and look and get an offer somewhere that you're pretty jacked about, why would you stay at a company if they just throw you some more money? Now, if it's a significant amount of money, right? So I wanna tell this quick story. So University of South Carolina, I bring this up a lot. We are in the middle of a coaching.

So if we found a coach and now we're trying to find our assistance for football. And I told my boss this. So our offensive coordinator signed a deal for $1.2 million, right? Offensive coordinator, I need to be a coach. Offensive coordinator signed a gig for $1.2 million Auburn University. I hate you, Auburn. Auburn comes in and offers him $2 million the next day in even leaves. After getting everything signed off, our offensive coordinator, after the board of trustees, after everybody approves, the next day leaves for an $800,000 raise now. In that situation, there's a lot of nuances there, but that's a significant amount of money, right?

And they probably ask you, Taylor, I don't get that. I'm more talking about a few grand from a job search, but that's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying, right? A $20,000 raise is only a $10 an hour now, a raise. So you have to be mindful of why you're jumping. Right a list, write things down. Make sure that you have all your ducks in a row. And don't be enamored because what's gonna happen is the manager, Mr. Mr. Mr. Manager, that come back to you, but oh my gosh, we're so sorry, we don't wanna see you, go, they're gonna be kind. Right, they're gonna be nice.

Right, but at the end of the day, you need to know why you're leaving because that Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Aren't really nice 90% of the time. Right, they're nice right now. They want you to stay, which is flattering. Flatter is amazing. You have to stick to your guns. So again, thank you again for tuning in this morning. I appreciate it lately. I'm gonna be here all week. So I'll be here Tuesday, Wednesday. I'm coming back home to Nashville Thursday. So no live show Thursday, we will have, I'm maybe a lot of show Friday. So I'm gonna come there. But again, counter office, if you have any questions, GM me, if you need to talk to a counter office, please email me text me.

I'd love to be involved. Cause I know counter office in the heart. So again, thank you for tuning in to guidance council. Two point out of this morning. I'll see you tomorrow morning. I may have a guest list. So we'll see you then. Peace.
