Hello, hello. Thanks for listening to guidance counselor 2.0. Listen, I want to give you a quick rundown of what this podcast is and what you're about to get into as you listen to these episodes. We had guidance counselors in middle school. We had guidance counselors in high school, but we didn't really have guidance counselors in college. And now as professionals, we don't really have anybody to turn to to ask a quick question to learn something about the job search or to navigate your career. So that is what I want this podcast to be for you. I want it to be a tool for you to navigate the job search and your career.
So that being said, I hope you enjoy this episode. And if you need to reach me, tailor at vacovac.com is how to get and touch me old-fashioned email social media at TDS&T D E S S E Y N. And finally, please rate and review this in the app store because I want this to be discoverable for others so they can navigate their careers. I hope you enjoy the episode. Alright, y'all righty. What's going on everybody? Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Great seal. Well, no one's here yet, but hypothetically, it's great to see y'all this morning. We are live Monday morning. Hope you're having a great weekend.
I know I did. Did some celebrating. We went up to Bowling Green Kentucky this past this weekend. Sully Brady, my wife's parents 70th birthday. I tell you what, you want to put things in perspective. Hang out with your parents. Hang out with older folks. Really put things in perspective. So that was awesome. Had a good time with the family. Yes, I did a lot of yard work. You know, your boy got dirty yesterday. I actually scraped up my finger pretty good. If you can't see that. We unloaded some horse stalls. So that was yesterday. Got a little workout in and we are live today. So again, happy Monday.
I'm excited to give back to you all today. It's just me. We're a little light on guests for the next week or two. But you know, really excited because I like doing these things. I really like being able to just do the solo shows. Because I can kind of obviously, you know, dictate it and kind of go wherever I want to. So for those of you are tuning welcome, say hey, we'd love to hear from you. Let me know where you're tuning in from. Tech Talk. Great to see you Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter. For those of you are tuning in to what this is.
So guidance comes for 2.0 is a show that stemmed out of COVID. Like everything else. And so basically, I am a recruiter. And when COVID hit, I was working 14, 16 hour days. I was having all these long conversations. I was like, man, there's gotta be a way to give back to the to people. Right? Because the conversation I was having at 8 a.m. with developer A was probably pretty applicable to job seeker like Z at 6 p.m. So I want to go live every day to give back quote unquote at scale. And so this is this is a this is a two sided marketplace.
So I say first off, this is a networking platform. The reason why I tell people say hey to engage to comment to throw a paper to Moji to be present is this is a networking club for TikTok. I know I know it. TikTok doesn't make it really easy for you to like engage and ask questions to network. But if you do hop on over to my LinkedIn and you can throw up a comment. But the reason why I do this is because I've had a lot of people messes me on the side again. I'm not making this up. I'm not making this up. It's a way for you to engage with me.
I'm actually being for real. I've had people on the show find mentor mentees. I've had people find jobs on the show. I've had people make actually friends on the show. So now the thing is though is that you need to comment because we're not the metaverse yet. Right. We're not the metaverse. We're not, you know, all hanging out with our avatars. So if you're watching this now or the future and I still tell people to comment to like to engage even if I'm not live anymore. Because people still look at this. Right. And so if you comment that brings social visibility yourself. Right. It's just about showing up at about engaging and there are people who want to network on the back of this show.
And so if you comment there's there is the opportunity for you to be networked in with everybody else in my community. So please do that. And then second off, this is this is a Q&A. I do this live every day because I want to answer your questions. Right. I developed this morning show as something that I would have wanted when I moved to Nashville in 2011. So I went to business school, but I didn't really know how to network. I didn't know how to find a job. I grew up in the restaurant industry. My dad ran a restaurant. His entire career. All I knew was evening shifts, evening jobs.
And so I so this show is a way to give back to you also if you have any question about the job search. Let me know. And also today is definitely led by y'all. I have some thoughts I can get into. But also if you have any questions about the job search, please ask them and I will try to answer them as well. I want to give some shout out to people who are to and again, TikTok's great. See y'all. I see y'all joining. Erica Mohammed Allison Crystal Becky. It's great to see you Victoria. It's great to see you as well. And then also want to give a shout out to that conference.
So they are the official coffee sponsor of the show. Coffee is great. I promise it's really, really good. I think I'm drinking sassy syntax right now. I think that's my favorite whatever whatever the light roasted. If you're a coffee fan and you want to have some coffee, go to that dot us. Go to their store buy some coffee. It's really good. But also to come to the conference. So it's in Wisconsin. You're probably Taylor. There's a tech conference in Wisconsin. Yes, it's going to be great. Huge. They are targeting over a thousand people for this event. It's going to be amazing. So go on there.
Use the code. There, there, there, there is a code. I forgot what the code is. Hold on. Let me, let me find the code real quick. What's the code? What's the code? What's the code? I'm trying to find it. Try to find it. Trying to find it. I can't find it. I'll figure it out. Anyways, so yeah, thank you all for tuning in again. I appreciate it. Alice is great to see you. Yes, Allison evening shifts. My fellow restaurant, ter. Yeah, evening restaurant shifts. And then Mohammed. It's great. So you're well also for the record. I just put out a video. I'm going to go and pause the music for the work.
I just put out a video. If you are not on my discord, I would love to have your part of it. So I'll also link it in the comments here. After I'm done. But basically what it comes down to is I wanted to create an ecosystem for hiring managers and job seekers to come together to learn from each other. And also to to get first access to my team's job. So if you want to be a part of my discord. I just posted a video on LinkedIn. You can go check it out to my last video. I posted at 9 a.m. this morning. But TikTok if you do want access to my discord for my top jobs again, these are obviously IT focused.
I don't just do engineers. We do project managers product design. If it's in the tech ecosystem business analyst data analyst. If it's in the tech ecosystem. I would love to have you a part of my discord community, but TikTok if you do want access to that. Go to the link in my bio and it's there. Alright, cool. So enough of me running my mouth. First off, if you do have if you've gotten a promotion. If you've gotten a raise. If you've gotten a title change. If you've deployed code on a Friday and you didn't burn anything down, please let me know. I would love to celebrate you.
I think we as individuals. I think we don't celebrate each other enough. It's I really, really want to celebrate you. If you got a job recently, let me know. Because I know the job search is tough right now. But I want to celebrate you. And if you feel weird, celebrate yourself. And you want to throw props to somebody else, please start in the chat. I would love to celebrate you all this morning. Alright, so we're going to dive in. So I want to talk about I want to talk about again, trying to wrap our arms around networking. You're probably like Taylor. I'm so tired. You talk about networking.
I understand that. But even if you're tired of me talking about networking, you're probably not even networking correctly. Even even like to the best of your buildings where I would say. Right. And so here's here's what networking over social media. So the so many people are like, I don't want to know where social media seems weird. The reason why it seems weird is because no one does it because no one's talking about it. That's what I want to bring more awareness to it. And the best thing I can tell you is to compare it to social networking on social media is essentially like opening up the contacts in your phone.
And essentially your phone pushing you a contact to network daily, which that's a pretty cool app idea by the way. But the reason why networking on social media is just the same is opening up your phone contacts is because what it does is it pushes you people. Right. When I say it pushes you people when you go on Instagram and you go on the stories part, there's all your connections right there. You go on LinkedIn. All of you, a lot of your connections are posting. Right. You go on Twitter. A lot of your connections are posting. Right. And so the reason why I just I tell people you really, really, really need to network on social media is because it's an easy way to get in front of people.
And it's an easy way to message people. Right. I have made so many amazing friends through social media because of the constant engagement right constant engagement constant engagement. So do that right again. I'm just trying to put in perspective right people are just so caught off guard about networking on social media. But at the end of the day it's just like going coming through your phone book and messaging people you haven't talked to it a bit. On the next thing I want to talk about I want to give a practical tip for Twitter right practical networking, networking tip for Twitter. So if y'all don't know what list are right so I'm actually going to share my screen right now.
We're going to look practical for those of you who all listen to the podcast obviously you won't be able to see it but I will try to communicate the best I easily can so let's talk about. Hold on real quick let's talk about list real quick right here we go here we go way there we there right where there so lists right so. The list feature so if you go to more and you go to list right again I talk about list all the time. But they're so currently important I want to give one practical tip on how to use Twitter to network so you have something called list you can follow my list but I have a list.
So what I did is I created a Twitter list of all the people that I either know or want to know in the tech ecosystem and I put them all on a list together right and so what this is so if you go here and you can actually follow this list as well by the way. I'm at least seven members on it right now and I'm adding it to it daily weekly but basically everybody on here is I've either had on my show or I know them or I want to know them and and basically what what Twitter list does is it's a concentrated area of your favorite text right so Twitter list and anybody can create this right I think Twitter list is just this is just this huge opportunity that Twitter doesn't advertise which I don't know why well I mean everyone has a thousand Twitter that's fine.
But but at the end of the day it's so important let Twitter list are so important because what you can do so that the problem with Twitter is it's so it's so vast right it's so vast and people are scared about Twitter because it's so vast right and so if you can if you can. If you can condense that that vastness into something where you can just open it up and not have to worry about the 350 million I think I saw a stat was like 350 million users on Twitter if there's a way where you can like. not look at all the 350 million Twitter users and just do the 50 that you want to network with that's that's list right and you can just say you can follow Taylor's list but you can create your own list right and so and then you know what I do from there I like I engage.
I comment I do all that right and again for those of you are tuning if you have questions about the job search right now I would love to help you so please ask them now but I'm just kind of go through some practical tips and tips and tricks on networking can talk this morning. I'm any any questions about lists but again list are incredibly important so we're going to walk through one more time right so we're going to do so homepage. Under the profile there's a more with the three dots click on that you see the list click list right you can create your own list right you see at the top right new list.
You can click that you can create your own thing. Yeah you can follow my list right because again look at all these list down here right so again you can do all this stuff I also have tech conferences right all speakers out there if you want to. If you want to follow a list for all of the you know RFPs and stuff that's the way to do it not RFPs call call for speaker CPACFAs whatever so that is Twitter list for y'all this morning. All right we got another question from Alex this morning Alex for me networking is one of those things where it's always room to improve and no one starts.
In the same place with it regarding comfort zone so I say yeah listen what what Alex says is best right now working is a weird thing right it just is but I will tell you this like that you only make it weird. Right like you're the only one that makes it weird and and and other people can sense the weirdness right so if you come across weird. Then like the other person is going to be weird as well just be confident right and again the biggest thing I want to talk about networking right this is the this is where really people miss out you ready.
Is people are like well I don't know what value I can provide them. Your your job is to not provide them value your job is to not provide the other person value your job is to pick that other person's brain when it comes to networking right so for example. My dad my dad was on I use my dad is example because again he's in the restaurant industry need found a job on LinkedIn like none of us have an excuse right I don't think the restaurant industry is mainly on LinkedIn my dad found a job on LinkedIn. In the restaurant industry so you don't have an excuse but what my dad did is he just hit up random people hey what's going on what you beat up to.
I'm looking right it was really casual the more the more kind of sophisticated kind of conversation like hey listen tell me about yourself what's going on do you like your job what's kept you there for so long what do you like about the company. Can you give me one piece of advice on on how to break in the interviews of this company right again you asked the other person you're essentially interviewing that person right I mean to be honest with you did this is crazy I think every every job seeker could have their own podcast. And capturing the unique conversations they have during the job search I think it would work I truly think it would work but again you your job is to not provide that person value right if you hit me up and want to learn about working for Beiko you don't need to offer me value.
I don't need your value I don't mean that to me mean I'm just saying. me up to learn more about Beiko right and and again where we talk about the three keys to great DM mean admiration flattery specific amount of time specific question right again one more time the keys to a good DM specific amount of time specific question and admiration flattery right that's how it goes hey Taylor I love Beiko I see you all online all the time we love to work at Beiko you got seven minutes to talk to me about how how what type of individual works best at Beiko. Right and here's the deal here's I may not want to talk to you or not be able to write like anybody my DM's right now I have no time to talk it I am just the business I've ever been in my entire career.
But I'll email you back like hey listen here kind of the here kind of the three tips on how to get into Beiko right I will give you tips and tricks here's another thing always ask for another introduction hey Taylor. It's it was great to talk to you today right only if you're vibing though right don't be don't be out there asking for like connections if if you're not vibing because that's just weird but if you and I are vibing or I send you really good email like hey, can you introduce me somebody else to Beiko. I will introduce somebody else to Beiko right but always ask for that introduction at the end of the conversation that is the game changer that is the absolute game changer.
Chris will comes in this is also my try to avoid Twitter because of all the other stuff thanks yeah Twitter like listen for me for me for me I like literally only follow my list and that's it Twitter is just too much for me it's just be totally frank with you so I only follow my list that's it. Anthony it's great see you Christina it's great see you. Allison comes in we are social creatures people love to show others show an interest being yeah listen so Allison brings up a great point I have this conversation who's I have it with the other day. Basically I had this conversation with people around I think more people are willing so first off COVID.
Listen I'm not going to go to talk but one thing I noticed about code is people were more willing to help other people because we were all in it together. Right we were all in COVID together everyone had to deal with it it wasn't something that was that like only a certain group of people had to deal with right everybody had to deal with all of the nervousness. and intricacies around COVID right so it bonded everybody right people are stuck at home people wanted to talk to people right and I talk about last year's that people will really want to talk to you and people are lonely so reach out use that through example you know we're at now so.
Pandemic right last four years has just been fucking wild let's be honest right so this. So COVID pandemic now we're in layoffs in the economy being nuts right but everybody's in it together everyone's in together right again the job market no one's immune from the job market. Everyone needs a job and everyone's affected by it right so we're all in it together right so use that to your advantage right now I truly think people are more willing to talk to you right now than ever before use that to your advantage. It's great see you Jonathan I'm assuming based off how you wrote that I think that maybe you JC it's great to see you yeah Twitter isn't your jam spoutable I haven't heard about it so I'll check that out Jonathan I believe that's you.
So yeah I'll definitely check that out. Cool all right so is there anything else any other questions please throw them up I'm trying to think of any major things again please make sure your resumes written well no no fluff words be specific. LinkedIn you got to have your LinkedIn set if you need tips and tricks on how to leverage my LinkedIn please go check that out of a code dot com back slash tailor under free resources on my website I definitely provide you that. What else. Scott comes in here I feel overwhelmed with the idea of having to be on all these platforms. To network so I can lane a job I'm social but my battery is quickly Jonathan I mean Scott I hear you knowing that I could automate some of this may feel as stress any guy so I love this question Scott thank you so much for this question again if you have any more questions please fill them up some of the wrap up here in a minute.
Scott I would just focus on LinkedIn LinkedIn and Twitter that's I mean that's it I tick talk listen I'm not going to get down kind of the marketing funnel type of things tick talk you can't really network on tick talk YouTube you can't really network on YouTube Instagram. I there's there's arguments for and against on Instagram Instagram's on a great you network in platform in my perspective. The best networking platforms are LinkedIn Twitter and discords discord servers right I would literally literally literally. Try to get into a discord I would love to have you part of my discord but just get involved somewhere James quick has a great discord Danny Thompson has a great discord just crazy crazy great great discords.
so go check those out and then linked it and Twitter Twitter is a lot right if you're if you're like Taylor I've never used Twitter my life and you're talking about Twitter makes me want to get out of it gets me nervous don't use Twitter it's fine just use LinkedIn in the discord. But just be somewhere and listen there there's no way to automate it that's that's the hard part a lot of people do automate it and it's just it just doesn't come across this in seer and it doesn't work right you can't automate social media as much as people say you can you can't.
That's a hot take that I stand by it so yes, God listen I get drained quickly just stick to one or two platforms in my perspective. In my perspective LinkedIn in discord servers but here's Allison right Allison comes in here I got a job offer through a Facebook connection in a job offer through Instagram connection so there you go I don't know. It works it works for some people right but if you're overwhelmed I would just stick to LinkedIn and discord. Another thing JC comes in Twitter spaces are amazing it's like a live podcast yeah Twitter spaces right and again you you got to think about this right.
The times are changing I'm pretty sure that's a song. Times are changing. A Twitter space is a meet up this is a meet up right this is a meet up right here what we are doing this morning this is a meet up. Discord servers are you meet up right long gone are the days where you just have to go to in person meet up or an in person conference you can be networked in all day every day because of social media which is the power of social media which is no one's talking about you can literally sit you know going going back to. Going back to to to Scott's question Scott I get drained with the in person stuff but boy if you just want to be networked in like go hop on a Twitter space and just listen to it and maybe say something really good and then hop off.
That's fine it's fine. Let's see here Chris good morning Anthony comes here so I was talking to an engineer manager and she mentioned to me that writing yeah the star method so. I was really familiar with the star method but somebody explains me recently and it makes yeah it makes sense right again writing your resume should be I used X technology to solve why problem because of the and I think that's the start start methodology. Let's see here what else. Christina comes in here I definitely agree with you Taylor Lincoln and Twitter been great for networking I just curate my news but yeah again it's curated nerd news curated newsfeed that's that's that's the important part that's the important part.
And I'm totally I'm going to process with 10 companies right now Facebook post just being honest that I'm looking is what triggered seven of those interest also guess like yeah. I love this right I love people saying stuff differently than me because again I'm only one recruiter right so again there you go right this LinkedIn user Jonathan things as you I don't know. You know 10 companies right now seven of them was because of a Facebook post right incredible incredible incredible. Let's see here what else. Mohammed I might have been lucky but I was able to look at this I love these stories you guys are proving me wrong and I love this so much.
I love love love this so much it might be it might have been lucky but I've been able to network you take talk once and turns out first I love this I love that so much Mohammed thank you for sharing that.
