key takeaways
- create content and events for the version of yourself from five to ten years ago, not for vanity metrics.
- build your own audience through newsletters and email instead of relying on borrowed social media audiences.
- practice gratitude daily by appreciating your baseline—health, shelter, relationships—before chasing next milestones.
- find mentors and leaders who set clear boundaries around family time and fitness, showing success doesn't require always working.
- fail intentionally and often to desensitize yourself to rejection so everything else feels easier.

we just like do an event and he's like yeah we should so I tweeted it out and then I texted a bunch of my friends and I was like hey do you want to just like come to this thing like no pressure I don't really care like four people could have showed up and I would have been super happy and I think it end up being like 40 35 people ended up coming and I was like wait this is so SI it was great it was awesome it was such a good break too and it was interesting as well and and and we could talk

to be an amazing time and uh uh yeah you should you should go everyone should go I I'll be there I'll be there um all right few more people tune in this morning um Jason it's good to see you Brian um yeah I'm not yeah I can't yeahh Chris it's good to see you um and then June ATL they can come hang out yeah then go go hang out with Jason um and again shout out Jason for helping me uh do all my content YouTube stuff appreciate you buddy all right Alex nothing me run my mouth let's first off get the people who you are
what they why they're here is to hear you so who are you what do you do because I barely know what you do based off your LinkedIn you you're a superwoman you do like 12,000 things yeah it's funny because I don't think anyone actually knows what I do um not even like my best friends they're like how do you make your money I'm like that's a good question you know my mom asked me that too she goes like what's your job and I was like no like like my friends and I always have a joke that if one of them was like held at gunpoint
and had to be asked what my job title was they just get shot and I was like yeah that's probably true um so hi I'm Alex I make content around Tech and startups as on H Tik Tok and Twitter and now I'm trying to Branch out onto LinkedIn and Instagram yes um I have founded three different startups uh my first one was in the cpg space where I built and developed this nail polish product which I ended up selling into uh Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters and Bed Bath and Beyond and then after that went on to build um three different Wellness brands for Walmart
and Target so that's where my my background was uh after that decided to leave the cpg world and join the tech World instead um and was the program m anager for Tech Stars Austin techar impact and then working over at techar music so where I sourced companies managed the whole entire program and um helped facilitate Investments and then after that founded another startup which ended up shutting down and then after that founded another startup um in 2021 which ended up doing super well which was actually the uh recruiting platform is a job board and talent Marketplace for Founders to find part-time work with other startups
um which got acquired about uh six months later so since then have been on a little bit of a sabatical doing the whole content thing um I'm starting a newsletter right now so I've kind of been everywhere sure yeah sounds like it um everywhere where I just uh I like bouncing around I like doing a bunch of different things so was that do you have a munchkin cat or is that a normalized cat no I have a um no it's a normal it's a kitten there for a second because I'm a big munchkin I want everything kind of compact because I have a corgi and
I want a munchkin cat munchkin cats are so that Munchkin cats are the Corgi of the cat world yes correct yeah yeah I have a thing for like short compact things anyways all right so um a lot to talk about uh EMT it's good to see you thanks for tuning in from the Montreal Airport I appreciate you um so let's talk let's talk South by super high level and the reason I talk about that is because one thing that you did is you facilitated more of an intimate setting and I think this was my first time at South by and what I realized is that
everybody went for the big everybody went for the huge events right and very few Brands were facilitating intentional conversations and so gun like cuz I'm heading up all things content Community gun like we're we're already talking what can we do to build more meaningful connections next year when we come out what are your thoughts on that what have you seen I because I feel like all these companies go for like the big major things y ou had Amazon with or audible with a damn Ferris wheel so what are your thoughts on all just creating community and being intentional yeah um one thing the reason why
I did a small event is because I hate big events like everything I do I think caters to to me it sounds self honestly I think it caters more to the person that isn't an extreme extrovert like I'm not the type of person for for as much as I love social media and I'm good at talking to people online I'm not the person that likes going to big events and to people like it's not yeah it's not who I am so I would rather host an event with 30 people 40 people where I vet every single person that comes in the door and I know
that they're all like super legit and I know that they're building something or they're Founders or they're in this world and I actually think that that makes for a way better event and a way better like like you said connection as opposed to hosting these giant events the reason why a lot of these Brands hold these giant events though is just for like brand awareness like their goal isn't really to get people to connect and then from the other side of the spectrum these like tech companies that kind of do it and invite all these Founders to connect their whole thing is that they're they
want to be like posted on social media like they're not actually doing it I think for the um for the goodness of the community sure well so I'm curious right I want to you said something here and I wanted to dig into it because that's why I started guidance counselor 2.0 I started this because I didn't know how to find a job when I moved to Nashville and I was in the music industry and playing drums and all that stuff so I wanted to create something that younger Taylor would want you kind of said the same thing where it's like you're creating stuff that you
want why why is it so important to be authentic to yourself especially in business right now yeah uh one of the big things that a lot of people ask me is like why I started on social media and the reason why I started and the reason why I think I've honestly been successful on social media is because I talk to the version of me that existed five to 10 years ago like when I first developed my when I first developed my nail polish product I was like sitting in the corner of my bedroom like trying to figure it out and like didn't know the only
entrepreneurs I know like my my dad's an entrepreneur I talk about this pretty openly on social media and stuff um but he's in real estate and so trying to go to like a 55y old man in real estate about a nail polish product like if you think he was helpful then jokes on you because he was big dad Vibes I'm sure big dad Vibes he was like figure it out Alex you're smart I was like okay um so I realized that I like the first person I actually ever saw in Tech in startups was um Justin con from twitch and he was on like Snapchat
and he started posting all these Snapchats about like what it was like thing and like and that I found was super helpful so it's kind of the content that I started wanting to make because I think that's what's missing a lot in this world a lot of people they want to lead with like Authority and they want to prove to everybody that they're really smart and they're really accomplished and like they've done a ton of stuff and I could talk about all the stuff that I've done but I'd rather actually show people like hey this is how you can go from zero to one or
like let's build this together let's figure this out or I don't know what I'm doing maybe you don't know what you're doing also so us you know I I know I know you know there's a lot of I've seen memes I'm sure you have too about being a founder and like spending half your day on podcast and half your day on Twitter and and and and that's about it you know and and and I I think I mean obviously that's a joke to a certain extent but why do you why why have you started I let's not talk about anybody else why have you started
to kind of more double because even since I've been following you over the last year or two I can tell the push towards social has been a lot greater over the last six months or so yeah biggest reason is because I think that it's way easier to um it's way easier to build anything and to sell anything if you have a social platform if I'm being like completely honest one of the big reasons why now I'm starting a a newsletter um is because it's a lot easier to like if you own your audience right um right now all my audience is borrowed my audience lives
on Twitter and it lives on Tik Tok and Tik Tok might disappear tomorrow and I don't own anyone's email and so I might have to start completely over yeah um another big reason why I started more over the last six months back on social is because I kind of took a break like I I was on a little bit of a spaical didn't really like I was employed I was working for techar still as an entrepreneur and residents for their music program still actively Angel Investing still making a ton of content and then reached this point where I was like I can't keep going anymore
like I need to like stop and figure out what actually makes me happy and like what is not going to make me regret my existence and so um I stopped for a few months and then like like you said over the last six months I'm like all right we're going back into it like let's just start why why do you think F like let me ask you this a little hot take a little hot take here on this Monday morning one do you think Founders should have a social media internet presence and two if depending whatever like why right like like do you think they
need one and then why I it depends on the brand and it depends on the company so I think if you have like an accounting platform um maybe not if it's like B2B SAS maybe not if your company is consumer it's a it's very helpful yeah um because if people can look you up and say like oh I trust this person they're more like ly to go try out your brand if I'm being honest yeah um also if you are the reason why I'm like kind of an advocate for Founders getting started on social media and creating their own personal Brands is because beta testing
is so much easier like I can put out a tweet and say like hey what do you guys think about this idea and and I can get responses that either say wow this is so smart this is so great wow we should do X Y and Z on top of it or I can be told that I'm a total idiot and if I like get told that I'm a total idiot and it's a horrible idea there's probably some Merit to it to be honest and like that means I can dive a little bit deeper into into it and understand like okay maybe this isn't solving
a problem or maybe it is and that's exactly how I built founder gigs which was the sold yeah I love that that's awesome um uh Ryan comes in here was just watching a video from Colin and Samir about this topic of having an audience already and creating a product to sell yeah I mean again I think it's you know I I obviously come from the recruiting world and kind of now venturing more so into the the content Community side of things um or devil as what they call it in the in the Tech Community but for me it's it's one of these things where I
mean when it comes to leveraging brain when it comes to building relationships like it's all done on the internet like it's it's just it's just done on the internet unless I mean and and I grinded without the internet per se for 10 years of my career at my last company I had a lunch every day I had a dinner almost every day I had happy hours I had I mean I grinded but then the three years I've been able to leverage social I mean it's been I I've equal to 10 years of output in three years from social so I think it's incredibly important um
that by the way say what I said plus one to that yes yes all right I want to talk about the title of this talk I said was was was living life to the fullest and I think a lot of you've been posting some really good stuff lately about you know um just living life to the fullest not being burn out um you trying to separate yourself from work a little bit you're very busy I can tell I'm very busy I think the world I I recently had a podcast with somebody that talked about how we've never fully recovered from covid that we all ramped
up our work levels and we haven't come down from it and I'm guilty of that too can you talk about some things you've been mulling over in your life about you know giving back to the fullest I know you've obviously been documenting about friend going through cancer um just just kind of unpack that because I think I think your messaging is so needed right now especially in today's world yeah um I mean I I I don't know if everyone that's listening kind of knows what happened but I could give a little quick overview uh one of my best friends was diagnosed with late stage cancer
about two years ago now um and it was it just so happened to coincide right when I was selling my company and and I was kind of met with this whole like the dichotomy of two different worlds right like something I've been working for for 10 years three different companies so hard finally like got it like the light at the end of the tunnel also my best friend's dying and so when that kind of stuff happens honestly all I could think about when it was happening was like oh I wish I could trade it like I would trade my whole oh 100% like if if
like it sounds so for for lack of a better term but like if I could make like a deal with the devil and they came and they said like hey would you trade your whole entire career all the money everything along with it for like her to be okay would you do it I would have done it in like2 seconds it it would been a no-brainer but I didn't have that option and so when you kind of walk watch someone that you really like love and care about go through that and you're going through it essentially alongside with them like I moved back to California
I stayed with her for 11 months I was there about nine eight nine months out of the 11 months that she was fighting cancer and um I I think when you're watching someone you care about go through that you start having these really hard conversations that you've never had before in your life right like you're sitting together talking about like okay well what do you want me to do after you're gone and like what like what uh what do you think I've like how could I've been better to you like you have these really like tough things going on and so all of that made
me change my perspective around how I want to live my life now and like how I actually want to spend my time and realizing that before I was probably hanging out with people that I didn't actually even like it was just because I was trying to fill some sort of void right a lot of us are guilty of that we don't be alone with our own thoughts and we don't want to feel lonely and we don't want to feel fomos so we do things that we don't actually want to be doing uh we work on projects that we don't actually want to work on because
we want the clout that comes along with it or we want a paycheck or we want whatever and like I'm very fortunate in the sense that I've reached the point in my career where I don't need to work for a paycheck anymore I can actually work on things that I really want to work on but I was still being offered stuff and working on it because I was like oh this would look good like if I posted this on Twitter that I'm working on this this would look good and this would make me look good and then I realized how meaningless that all felt and
so now kind of going through this whole like uh just just realizing that it's just not worth it to be working on things and doing things that you don't want to do in all honesty just because it's most of it's just a vanity metric anyway so yeah I I think you know I've been having this conversation a lot and and I mean in full transparency and I've been very open about this too and that's why I'm drawn to you because I can tell you're just you're very open and I just feel like that's the the way to be is that I mean I'm making 40
50% less than what I was making uh before kind of the downturn whatever you want to call what we're in right now right and it's like we I've had a lot of conversation with my wife about this it's like what's what does success look like right I mean you could argue that some people say I was successful and now I'm not successful some people see on my social media like Taylor you're killing it right little do they know we're cutting back on everything right now right and so I'm curious what what have just been kind of some theme or just some learnings that that you've
that you've really kind of taken to heart um during this time yeah um it's funny because one of my biggest learnings actually came more so from watching my family and watching my friends ex like experience what I was going through in a way like my parents were very close to my best friend like we you know we've been on family trips together we've done all these things sure watching them watch me experiencing it was way more eye opening than anything else because I come from a family that was very much like you need to work hard you need to work harder oh you sold a
million dollar worth of product why wasn't it $5 million worth of product why wasn't it 10 you know like those were the conversations I was having previous to this if I'm being completely honest and then it became Alex maybe like you've done enough maybe it's fun you take a step back and I was like okay okay were those words said to you yeah how did that make you feel it I would probably cry did no it made like it literally made me cry because I was like wait what do you mean and they're like you've done enough like you're you've gotten to the point where
like you've done enough where you can take you can afford to take six months off and like if you w ant to do that we'll also support you like we we'll support emotionally if you choose to do that and it kind of made me realize at this point like my parents processing that I am I am a mortal I guess like like I am not um even though I'm young I'm 32 uh my friend was 3 31 when she got diagnosed that like I could also like not exist tomorrow right like like tomorrow is not promised for any of us and I think my parents
have been thinking about this whole time how uh they're getting older and maybe they want to be successful for us and for the kids and for all that but not really putting themselves in our shoes that like you know our tomorrow is not promised either so why aren't we doing the stuff that makes us happy and why aren't we appreciating our accomplishments and I think it's a good lesson for pretty much anyone like no matter what age you are is like you really do have to appreciate every step of the way because if not like you just end up on this treadmill like okay what's
next like I I ended up getting a coach last year or two years ago when this all happened and the first thing I told her when she asked me why I wanted to work with her is I was like I'm I'm worried that I'm never actually going to be happy and she's like um she's like Alex it's funny because I can relate to that the longest I've ever been happy was 15 minutes after I bought a purse that I was able to afford for my acquisition or something like that I got that Birkin bag yeah and that was it and I was like yeah see
that's my concern with success is that no matter what I'm always gonna be chasing some sort of carrot and like every accomplishment there's always going to be like okay well now I need to reach this next Milestone yeah I'm so glad we're on this Dominic what you said here the feeling that you're truly enough is truly wild the process yeah I mean literally like I mean even Al even you Alex just saying that like I got teed because like even just somebody saying that to me like would would just I I think I think there's a lot of people who are high achiever I'm one
of them right like I don't know if taking anyr IMA three through and through I say what I said me too yeah that makes total sense that makes total sense so so I just feel like that we have this engine and that's what I'm trying to focus on right now like I'm trying to pull back I mean I'm about to have a second kid we were talking about this backstage and like there's been a lot of stuff in my brain it's like I'm I'm have to take off I'm not going to be able to do my routine I'm not going to be able to put
out the content I've been putting out I'm going to fall behind I'm not going to be able like wins wins wins enough enough you know what I'm saying like like like this could all go away tomorrow and I'm worried about that you know what I'm saying like those are trivial things and so I think it's I think it's something I've been trying to focus on too um you know like I said this in an interview recently I mean my wife and I are going to New York on Wednesday if you have any New York Rex please send them my way but we're going we're going
to New York on Wednesday for a little baby moon and I've said this on on a podcast recently I was like you know when you go to New York you go to Miami you get caught the designer things and you you do all that stuff and we live on a farm I live on a farm I have horses I have 15 acres here in in in Nashville and literally we come back with designer [ __ ] I'm like why the [ __ ] do we even buy this I live on a farm I got to go I got to go feed the horses and get
all dirty and like scoop their poop up like what you know what I'm saying it's like and it's like and and everybody's always looking over their shoulder from like a success thing and it's like you really got to truly be content with where you're at yeah it's like the pursuit of enough like when when is enough right like there's always gonna be there's always gonna be something that you're ch asing no matter what like you're always going to reach one point especially if you are a high achiever especially if you're a Founder especially if you're kind of in this world um you're always going to
reach one point and then like within I can guarantee within a month to three months you're going to say okay well what am I supposed to be doing next and that's why also if you if you read the studies on people who have like large Acquisitions what they experience for the two years after their Ac quisitions that a lot of them end up going into like deep depression because they don't gold medalists too gold medalist too they don't know what to do next and so I think that's what all comes back to um what we were talking about initially which is like finding out how
to live a fulfilling life even without the accomplishments even without all of that and that's what I like talking about how have have you impl because I I like being practical with these things I like being heady don't get me w rong love being heady but I love the practicality of kind of these interviews is there anything that you've done or you hold yourself accountable to that maybe you can share to maybe somebody else can pick up hell even even myself yeah um one of the big things uh that I do and and I don't know if this is too heady or not but like
just honestly practicing gratitude like realizing like looking around and saying wow like I woke up this morning a that's [ __ ] cool b i I have like an apartment that I live in my fridge is full I have a car to drive even if I lost everything I have an incredible family that would like take me in I have friends that would pick me up on the side of the road at 3 o' in the morning if my car broke down like what else could I everything else is a is a is a plus to that right like if that is my Baseline level
I'm doing pretty freaking good uh so there there's a guy on social media his name is Tim chusano I don't know if youve stumbled across his content he's out o f New York City he's got a wife and daughter and he produces just his Vlogs got him famous on Tik Tok over a million followers and he works he's a VP of yeah and he talks about being addicted to gratefulness and and to to just be he's coming out with a book and it's basically it's like being addicted to gratitude or something like that and about how like you know he was saying even being adct
even being appreciative like like he would say by the way spin drift is great this is not an ad but basically he was like being appreciative about how this looks and like how this was made like he talks this is how his brain works about how he's so appreciative with small things and I will tell you what I I struggle with not being appreciative like I am just so onto the next thing that I am trying to slow down and be focused um because I'm all I'm just so big picture and driving all the time that I that I can't even feel like to celebrate
yeah I think that's a super common thing my boyfriend the other day was like annoyed about something he was in a super bad mood and I I looked at him and I was like what's wrong like why are you pissed off and he's like oh I'm mad because blah blah blah blah this person got my order it was like it's like a person got his order wrong and he already had a bad day and I was like oh I was like that's a bummer that like we get to go home to our really nice house and like we to go sit with our like new
cats in the moment though it's frustrating as hell to hear that 100 but then it was so funny because as I started naming all these things that it was like in comparison to what he and don't get me wrong I don't invalidate his feelings like it's not like that but like he was having a diva moment like it was a diva moment okay and um and and he just looked at me and he goes yeah you know life sucks doesn't it like he like he just started cracking up because he was like damn you're right like you're right like this whole thing means nothing compared
to l ike what we actually have and like what we have to be grateful for and like I honestly think just knocking yourself out at these points is the best way to do it and it takes practice I think happiness takes practice I don't think it's a natural yeah I I I totally agree with that I totally agree with that um I just realized I have a call um so I'm gonna so I I do this is so good I just feel like we're just scratch the surface I don't want to end yet I'm gonna message it's actually my CEO I'm gonna say hey I'm
finishing this up um I I speaking about CEOs and stuff I I want to give a shout to to tasja um uh who's who's my CEO like I mean he was even encouraged enaging me like Hey listen like I want you to be able to work out during the day and like take some time off during the day and like pull back a little bit I mean because he knows how hard I run and I think having people around you especially from a business perspective that can respect that because in my last company that wasn't the case right I was like go drive numbers always
right and then it was so refreshing to come to a startup and have the founder go Hey listen I'm big on Fitness I want you to be healthy so go work out day it's fine and and like I talk about just real quick about aligning yourself with people in business that like share your same thoughts and beliefs yeah I I actually just made a video about this on Tik Tok um that I didn't know how to set boundaries in my work life because I had never met a successful person that was really good at setting boundaries in theirs until I joined techstars and um I
met my my former boss Amos he's now one of my good friends and a partner in one of the businesses that we're working on um and he told me I remember like my first week he was like Alex if you call me or text me after 6 PM I'm not going to answer and he's like and the reason why I'm not goingon to answer is because I'm tucking my kids into bed and I'm eating dinner with my family like he's like thos e are the two things and if you disrupt those things I'm going to be a very unhappy person like it was so and
it was like so nice but it was so he was so stra forward and he told me the same exact thing he's like I wake every he like told me his schedule he's like I wake up at 4:30 in the morning so I can go on a 20 M bike ride he's like an extreme athlete so I can go on a 20 mile back bike ride I will be into the office at 9:30 on the dot please try not to contact me before then and do not contact me after 6 and it was like he just set this boundary with me and one day actually
kind of recently I asked him about it I was like well why like what was up with that like I think it's really awesome but like tell me more about it and he was like I realized a long time time ago that I would be a lot richer and I'd be a lot more successful if I did like quote unquote richer right I would be a lot more quote unquote successful if I did all these things if I worked later if I if I like showed up earlier he's like but I would be way less happy and I would be way less fulfilled and um
it's not the life that I want to live because my kids are only young once like why wouldn't I want to be there like they're not going to want to tuck me into bed in five years and now his kids are both teenagers so he's like yeah I mean look at them now like can't tuck them into bed now but I got those years to do it and that really changed my perspective around like what success truly means and setting those boundaries and understanding like it's okay to kind of tell people like no this is what I'm going to do and this is how I'm
