okay to vacay
key takeaways
- track pto as a manager and encourage employees to use it; unlimited pto often means people take less time off.
- your boss won't tell you to take time off, so you have to advocate for yourself and set boundaries.
- if things feel off at home, work will suffer too; take time off to recharge and protect your long-term health.
- notice when you're drained or stressed as a signal you need a break; burnout in the short term hurts you long term.
- as a contractor, budget your hourly rate to cover unpaid time off so you can actually take breaks.

Hey, also, you're probably Taylor you now have a pink You now have a pink Design I do I do I have pink now shout out shout out Alex puller Al's puller is on for setting us up trying to just go more beachy Bob You know what I'm saying just trying to just be be chill right trying to channel my inner So let's talk about Vacation PTO If this was a group setting I'd say how many people in your struggle with taking PTO raise your hand if you are watching this and you struggle with taking PTO Comment let me know your thoughts. Do you struggle with it?
Do you not struggle with it? Just a simple yes or no? I'll know what you're talking about when you comment here because for me I struggle with taking PTO I really do it is a push and pull But I do I would say this while I struggle with it. It is one thing that I try to Probably push against the most in that I take a lot of time off I my most successful year That I've had as a salesperson recruit or whatever I took the most vacation that year I think I took about 30 days that year off and of course it was my most successful year I think for me I think you need to work again.
We're talking about company culture here I think you need to work with the place that That promotes taking time off You know there there's a lot of pushback these days where it's like, you know, do you offer free? Unlimited PTO because if you offer unlimited PTO people don't have a guidelines people like guidelines people need to you know You have 15 days. Okay. I'll take 15 days if you say unlimited people will take less than 15 days I'm I'm a sense the way I operate is I'm fine with unlimited PTO. I will test your limits But I'm good with unlimited PTO, but I think as a company.
I think that's something you need to be mindful of and also track right for me LA struggles would have been too broke before now difficult though. Yes Absolutely, and then Damien I'm taking today often some today and tomorrow. Hey, Damien. Thanks for tuning in on your day off Man, I appreciate Pia. It's good to see you. Um, Pia. It's good to see. I love that. So for me Like companies you need to be mindful and you need to keep track of PTO to encourage your people to take time off Like that is incredibly important right? You're talking about good culture if my boss came to me and said hey Taylor like we track P to you like you know We checked PTO I see that you know you have only taken 10 days off this year or so far like you should you should take off Another 10 days like god that would be cool If anybody's washes if a company's ever done that let me know I don't think that's think because my dad has always said this my dad has always said No one your boss no one in an organization is going to come to you and tell you that you are working too hard Hey, Taylor you're working too hard take time off.
That's never been told to me ever ever That's not a bad thing it's not a bad thing at all, but for me Like that's never been told to me before right? Hey, you're working too hard You take time off and so you need to look out for yourself actually like for me I don't know about y'all this last week actually had a ton of thoughts actually have a lot of great thoughts I have a lot of great thoughts a lot of great ideas about how I do my business How I treat people how I want to innovate have to treat people better a lot of that stuff comes from my vacation I had a great vacation thinking about ways to help better my clients across the country in Kansas across Christian how to take care of people better like that stemmed out of vacation So a lot of times if you're feeling at your end and you need time take time right?
I tell my team all the time like listen you need to take time for yourself Right if it's not right at home. It's not gonna be right at work Again, let me say that again if it's not right at home It's not gonna be right at work And I can't take credit for that I learned that from Sid michard and Taylor Roberts in our Raleigh office and that's so incredibly important You take time off for yourself. No, so don't don't feel bad Right like I'm giving you permission today to walk through this week to walk through this month to walk through this year and Give you permission to take time Take time off for yourself Beak, you know what and be unashamed right be unashamed I think there's this culture where it's like in a lot of it.
I follow Kylie there's there's there's this one guy That follow on tiktok he's fantastic is in Chicago Justin Rod or Rod or Rod dot me or something like that And it's like the millennial thing right we get anxiety for taking time off because we feel like we need to work all the time like listen like you don't you don't and and and and and for me I really truly want to give you the confidence to step into it and say hey, you know what boss I'm taking time off is we I'm taking time off next week. I think it's incredibly important So there's been a lot of comments to come in definitely if you have comments you have thoughts you have questions Please at me comment me And let me know your thoughts But but here so few more coming through here Pekwita come on with that blonde bronzy glow.
Yeah, absolutely been all boat for a week Ellie it goes working for myself and as a contract and as a contractor It's like I don't have paid time off. Yeah, I mean Listen, we've talked about this right from from a contracting side of things and rates side of things This is where you have to know your your weapon not your wealth your cost and and make sure that you You get your hourly rate to cover some time off right? You know a weeks so let's say you're getting paid You know, let's say you're getting 70k You know, that's around 35 an hour and let's say you need to you know, you need to budget and hourly rate to To make sure that you get that covered Because Elliot is correct if you are a 1099 or your w2 contractor through recruiting firm you have to budget in from a cost perspective From your rate perspective taking time off Pia so true.
I have instances. We're taking time off was frowned upon. Yeah, and again Listen, here's the deal like if there's a big deadline like I'm not saying like peace in like a big deadline and then go off and like drink my ties Right, I'm not saying that like be strategic about when you take time off But but but but I think the whole thing like that's bad culture That's bad culture. You work for organization Where it's frowned upon to take time off that is poor culture and you need to move on Piquita goes I wonder if a manger said that would the employee be mature enough to receive it and not feel like OMG What do they want?
Why do they want me? Yeah, listen that piquita just crushing it this morning I appreciate you girl. Yeah, and that's a whole another thought. That's a whole another thought if if if if my boss came to me Evacum as hey Taylor, you know, you need to take time off. I'd be like Wait a minute. Why do I need to take time off? Am I mean do I need to take time off? Am I like projecting? What does that look like right and so I get it right? I get it piquita. I get it and and and again I think for me I think as a manager if you do tell your employees that make sure you're saying hey You're doing great right start out affirming which is a whole another you know Communications I think start out affirming hey, Piquita listen You're doing amazing job right now.
You need to take care of yourself You need to take time off. I'm sure that will be more received than hey Taylor. I see you haven't taken many days off You should take days off Charles Discretionary wealth is time off for yourself. I agree. I agree Elliot your boss is not going to come to you and tell you that you're working too hard and take time off if it's not right at home That's not right work. Yeah, that's it. That's it. Thank you. That's so good. No. It goes when do you know when you've worked enough? For me I think things start bothering me a lot more Right I get up a little bit more stress like I'm really big about feel and vibe right the shirts the pink the floral all that jazz Like things got to work right like you know before this last week, you know I was kind of reeling a little bit right I felt very unsettled And I think that's when you know you've taken work out But you have to have a lot of empathy you got to have a lot of EQ if you don't what like going to work in the morning and you're like Get up and you're like oh man like I'm not really feeling this than like Yeah, that that that is when you know you've worked enough at least at least in my my my experiences my experiences You may be able to interpret that differently you may have different feelings on that but for me specifically if I wake up drained and and really kind of As a little lot and got me more than they usually do.
I think it's then Time time to take time off so don't let me know if there's any more thoughts questions That was really good. Listen. Here's the deal right PTO's hard to ask right. We live in a culture where you know It's hard to look out for ourselves, right? You know, I'm I'm a father. I'm a husband right those are things that I need to constantly be where it is hard for me I something you know for being truthfully honest here I've been in counseling for for three years right being able to like to take time off for me to ask for me to To be confident in asking what I need and what I want and that is extremely difficult That is that is extremely extremely difficult And I've had to work on it right and so I'm not gonna sit here and say it's an easy thing I'm not saying that you're a washes.
You're like right. Well, I feel I'm healed Right, I'm great now Taylor said take time off. I'm gonna walk in confidence from here on out and ask my boss to You know all this time off I'm not saying that I'm not saying this conversation And this moment is gonna fix that what I'm saying is listen I get it. I understand I deal with it as well But what I'm telling you to is that Sometimes taking more time off is actually gonna benefit you more down the road than then then the opposite And again, that is just my experiences And because I do know that talking about time off and work like balance is a very private thing It is a very intimate thing about how you run your household Whether you're married or your single like does a very you thing It's why I understand that but for me I truly truly think that you need to take more time off than you probably are and to have confidence in what you bring to the table And to apply that in your life not only at work but also professionally because that's what I've done right I know what I bring to the table at Beiko.
I know what I bring to the table at my house With in my household and into have that confidence Has helped me a lot to ask for things that I want So again y'all, thank you again for hanging out with me today I appreciate it a ton if you have any more questions, please at me comment me. I would love to hear from you Pick reading us pass the Taylor set and up people sent people free today It's definitely a generational thing absolutely it is the generation struggles with foam up 100% we struggle with foam up You can unplug recharge and come back listen works always gonna be here.
It's always gonna be waiting for you Right your code base is always gonna be here right can it's are always gonna be here right Your health for the longevity of working in that code base or working with candidates are working with clients is gonna be the most important thing Again, it's long term. It's not short term. Do you get burnout in short term? You're gonna crush yourself long term so y'all have a great money It's so good to be with you all today.
