key takeaways

  • use font 10 and garamond on resumes, keep them one to five pages depending on experience level.
  • upload your resume to dice, career builder, and monster; linkedin shows you're a real person.
  • look for recruiters who've stayed at the same company for at least two years, not job hoppers.
  • make your resume tell your story with tech jargon and background details recruiters can use to sell you.
  • interview recruiters like they're interviewing you before meeting in person.

Hey everyone Wanted to go ahead and dive right in to where we left off to episodes ago before that Obviously want to go ahead and quick run down if you need to reach out Email is gonna be the best way to reach me regarding any jobs job related questions. That's gonna be Taylor at vaco.com Again, that's V is in Victor ACO.com Next thing if you need to reach out want to follow me on Twitter for more funny mainly just cat gifts and sports With some tech sprinkled in there T-decent T d E s s e y n also Instagram snapchat as well So and then finally want to remind people to go rate this podcast On the app store would love for this thing that I don't know gains in traction the market and allow other people to view it Outside of my personal network, which would be pretty cool So want to go ahead this episode?

We're just gonna quick recap if you are really like just 80d like I am and really don't want to listen to the four episodes before this Here's a quick recap of what we talked about and then the next episode We will get into specifics on how to work with recruiters and meaning them in person So like we talked about the previous four episodes first thing right in a resume I recommend font 10 and ghermounds I know that's really super picky and some people design as you probably have your own thoughts on this font Don't judge me. I think it looks great on a resume and I do have a resume template I can share I also want it the resume to tell a story and to give a lot of information as much as us recruiters can sell you Your resume needs to have a lot of tech jargon and also be able to You know really tell about your background so I would in a nutshell if you're if you're just starting on the job search and And you just graduated college or have a year to experience I would limit it to one pages You know if you have three to four years two pages and I would probably go all the way up to five pages and stop it at five pages Next thing once you do write your resume.

I would then get it uploaded to the internet DICE is what I prefer the most I know a lot of people came up to me after my last episode And they've never heard of dice before so it you have to be an IT to have a dice profile and you don't necessarily need to be a developer Just be an IT Career builder is great. There's a lot of people in career builder. It can get a little overwhelming from a recruiting perspective sometimes And then monsters always good as well LinkedIn a lot of people asked me hey tell me about LinkedIn does it need to be you know Do I need to have one?

What are your thoughts? I would absolutely have one? It's kind of weird, but it shows that you're a quote unquote real person. I would have a professionally done LinkedIn picture I would also make sure that all of your positions are up to date a lot of people asked me what they should put in their LinkedIn I would just do two or three sentences to summarize your position if you're developer I would list your technology stack that you've worked with in a summary of the project of the application you worked on But in general you can look at mine. It's just two or three sentence outlining what I do in a nutshell Finally looking at recruiters And which ones to use I would definitely you know Interview them like their interview in you.

I would look at an individual who's been at the same company for more than two years recruiters tend to chase money and So they kind of bounce around every 18 months kind of like the typical developer And so I would definitely look for recruiters who's been at the same company for more than two years I've been in the national market now for four years. I'm still learning the market and By no means have you know a really good grasp on the market So you know I've been doing it for four years in Nashville I would look for a recruiter who's at least been doing it for a year probably two and then if if the recruiter can check off both Qualifications then it's probably a good start But somebody who's come out of college who doesn't have a recruiting experience.

This is their first gig You know, I was one of them once and I know I would want to give it be given a chance But I would approach with caution for sure. So the next episode We will go ahead and dive in on So a recruiter calls you about your resume that you have posted on dice and he wants you to come in I would highly recommend it and what we'll do is we'll get into that on the next episode what questions to ask how to approach meeting with your recruiter what to expect and We will continue to build on this topic over the next few episodes Thanks for listening and again go rate us follow me on Twitter and For more cat gifts.

Thanks guys. Appreciate it
